Tension and Trauma Release Exercises (TRE®) is a simple yet powerful somatic practice designed to help the body naturally release deep-seated tension, trauma, and stress patterns.
Created by Dr. David Berceli, Ph.D., TRE® activates the body’s innate shaking mechanism, known as the neurogenic tremor. This natural process releases accumulated tension, soothes the nervous system, and helps the body return to a state of balance and homeostasis. When this natural shaking process is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body can address muscle and tissue tension and allow the nervous system to deactivate its defensive fight-flight-freeze response.
The neurogenic tremor is a natural, healthy response that all mammals are born with. It enables the body to release tension and contraction patterns while helping the nervous system reset from a heightened state of alert. Although this tremor mechanism is naturally embedded in our biology, modern life often suppresses it, as we tend to rely heavily on the thinking mind and neglect the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
